Starting Your Essay
As a starting point of any essay always make an outline of what you want to include. Your starting point is to read the question and pick out key words. Take your time and think about what the question is asking you then write down ideas that link with these keywords. For example in an essay on literature look out for themes or characters which may pertain to the question.
Always make an essay outline. This can be a simple list of what you would like to include in each paragraph. It will change as you write the essay but will also offer a guide when things get sticky. Remember that all essay follow a certain outline such as below.

Mind Maps
You now have a general idea of how to lay out an essay. A good tip now is to make a mind map. This is a way of brainstorming whilst thinking about the essay question. For example in a literature essay you would need to read the book and try and pick out certain points such as themes or characters or plot devices that link with the question.
Doing this will give you a good wealth of information on the book and plenty to work on when answering your question. A mind map is also excellent for jotting down page numbers of quotes which you may want to use saving a lot of time when referencing your essay.
Writing the Essay
Now you have all the information you need and can use your essay outline to help you write your answer. Use each paragraph to get a point across. Keep them succinct and to the point. If you feel the need to elaborate on a point use a linking paragraph so as to break the essay up and make it easier to read. This will also help with your word count.
Before you know it you will have your essay all written down. Now you need to read through. Read it aloud as this will point out any parts which don't make sense. What sounds good when you read it can often sound different when read out aloud. Get someone to proof read it as well and ask for their opinion. Most lecturers in University will offer advice on your piece of work.
Referencing an Essay
One of the most important parts of the essay and one that will help you get the extra marks you need is referencing. You need to reference any book, website, quote etc. that you use. There are different ways of referencing with the most popular being the Harvard way. You will need to ask the person setting the question how they would like their references, or which style guide they prefer to be followed for referencing.
